Hands Off – My Hike!

NJ Sierra Club Chapter Takes A Hike On Trump Protests

Perfect Example Of The Decline And Fall Of Environmental Activism

Today, as over 1,000 “Hands Off” protests are scheduled across the country in a mass mobilization against Trump, the NJ Chapter of Sierra Club is literally taking a hike.

The Sierra hikers might advance their goals, get more exercise, and meet more singles in the streets today, rather than the trails.

The NJ Sierra’s website Calendar of Events (screen shot above) shows two hikes sponsored by the Chapter, but NOTHING about the Hands Off protests.

Their Political Action webpage has nothing about Trump or Hands Off.

The latest entry to their press release page is about a bill about siting restrictions on …. wait for it …. crematoria! How irrelevant can you get?

Their entire webpage has nothing about Trump, Trump EPA rollbacks, or threats from Musk/DOGE or Project 2025.

Yes, these are all national issues that are the primary responsibility of the National Sierra Club.

But that is absolutely no excuse for failing to educate, organize and mobilize the NJ Sierra membership against the radical Trump regime and its comprehensive attack on everything the Sierra Club and millions of Americans have fought so hard for for decades.

I can’t seem to find out if National Sierra Club is a member of the Hands Off campaign or supports the protests. The Hands Off list of about 200 partnering organizations does not include Sierra Club. All I could find from National Sierra Club was a pathetic fundraiser and one short Facebook post. But the Michigan Sierra Chapter does. And so does the North Star Chapter (Minnesota) And the Rio Grande Chapter.

This is another in a sickening pattern of terminal decline of not only the NJ Chapter of Sierra Club – where I worked for 7 years – but of virtually all NJ environmental groups.

My good friend former Director Jeff Tittel very likely would have been a leader in organizing the Trump accountability campaign, and he likely would have been invited to speak at events.

WTF is going on with the current Director and Sierra Executive Committee?

[Update: A reader succinctly answered my question:

ex nj dep employees run it now

Exactly right.
