Starting goalkeeper! Sophomore year.
Might have started as a freshman except for the superb Senior keeper Brad Wilhelm.
We were diverse before diversity was cool – the first row has 5 different players from 5 different countries. They scored ALL the goals!
Starting defenseman Sophomore year. We sucked.
On my first shift I caused an “own goal” by trying to block a shot from the point that deflected off my thigh into the net. Later that first period (against Darien Conn.), I was deked out so bad I fell down at the blue line and gave a breakaway that scored. I think we lost like 9-0.
But we got better: next year I was named All County and Senior year we won the Championship.
Here are photos from 1973 and 1974. My hair was long in 1973 (Junior) but I had a pony tail by Senior year, a fact that explains why I was “Honorable Mention” my senior year, despite having been named All County the year before. We lost our coach Ernie Stretton who supported me and the asshole replacement hated my guts. My defense partner Steve Cookingham – who also was All County – and I manned both the power play and man down. Senior year, this new coach benched me for both and inserted an inexperienced and less talented freshman! I still remember the humiliation.
