The Great Couch Caper
[Update: as of 4 pm, the couch was cleaned up! Great work guys, and thanks for keeping your promise! ~ end update]
About 2 weeks ago, I saw the couch depicted above illegally disposed on the land of the State Juvenile Justice Facility in Bordentown, just on the Fieldsboro border on the west side of Burlington Street, County Rt. 662.
I assumed it would be removed immediately – especially given all the Christie DEP talk about enforcement of illegal dumping on State lands.
If the stuff is not removed immediately, those sites tend to become magnets for other illegal dumpers and before you know it, you have a major problem on your hands.
But, over 2 weeks have gone by and the couch is still there, so today, I stopped to check things out.
It was clear that since the couch was disposed, a new locked gate had been installed and sign posted:
So, why had the couch not been removed when they installed the new gate and signs?
I called the number on the sign and spoke with a receptionist named Dawn. Her phones were down and she was unable to transfer my call to the Maintenance Department or the Superintendent’s Office.
But, she called me back shortly after and said she had spoken to the head of maintenance, a man named Tom, who assured her that the couch would be removed “as soon as possible”.
I suggested that that should be today and that I would be monitoring progress. We’ll keep you posted
I’m sure the good folks in Fieldsboro don’t appreciate a scene like this on their front door:
